Introducing Kibera

Yesterday, Tuesday March 15, I spent two hours in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, one of the most populous in Africa, with the Youth Initiative group, which works on organic farming...

The group, lead by Erik Ogoro Simba, has started three years ago to grow tomatoes and vegetables in the middle of the slum.

10 people are now taking care regularly of the farm and the greenhouse. They take care of bringing clean water to the aera and manage to sell the products for a reasonable price to the residents of this neighbourhood of Kibera.

According to a recent census, 300 000 people live here in Kibera.

It is one of the most populous part of Nairobi and one of the largest slum in Africa.

It has indeed become a city within the city, with its own districts, services, schools, churches, shopping areas, and medical facilities.

More to come in two stories I'm working on...
