Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki heads to Ethiopia for the Igad summit

The Daily Nation announced this morning that President Kibaki is expected to leave for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the 15th extraordinary Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) Summit on Sudan this Monday.

The plane carrying the President and his delegation will depart Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly before 2.00 p.m.

The special summit aims at evaluating the progress of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan and encouraging the parties to ensure full implementation of the remaining few but weighty issues before the referendum on January 9, 2011.

The Igad brokered CPA was signed in 2005 by the Government of Sudan and the Southern based Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Army (SPLMA) to end two decades of warfare.

The international community, donors and the Sudanese people have placed high expectations on Igad to successfully oversee the transitional period, and especially the holding of this crucial National Referendum vote on self-determination for Southern Sudan.

The referendum could then lead to the creation of a new country for South Suda, and Idag will be involved in supevising the creation of a viable and democratic governments in both the new South and North Sudans.

President Kibaki is the current chair of the Igad sub-committee on Sudan. He is expected to give a key note address during the special summit.

This summit is expected to bring together the President of Sudan Omar Al-Bashir and SPLA leader Salva Kirr.

Accredited Igad six members include Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Somalia and Djibouti.
